SCIENCE Inventor’s anniversary celebrated with a doodle

The inventor of the first electric battery, Alessandro Volta (who gave his name to the volt), was born 270 years ago and his invention, shown in Google’s "doodle"

on Wednesday, was designed 215 years ago; 17 March, 1800 to be precise. Volta observed frogs and discovered that pieces of metal connected to the lower half of frogs, produced an electrical signal. The theory in vogue at the time is that of animal electricity, which focuses on the properties of animal tissue. Volta is distinguished by theorising that it is the zinc and copper in liquid contained in the frog's foot, and not the frog itself, that matters.
