March 9 th, 2015
The leader of Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram, AbubakarShekau, has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, which controls a large part of Iraq and Syria, in an audio message Saturday. This is a simple audio recording, accompanied by a picture of a microphone, whereas usually Shekau is visible in the messages it broadcasts, mostly close-up. "We proclaim our allegiance to the caliph [Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, head of the IS] (...) we listen and we obey in difficulties as in prosperity," the voice said, identified as that of AbubakarShekau. The recording was broadcasted on Boko Haram’s Twitter account.
