Bouteflika announces Family Code reform

"I ordered the government to charge an ad hoc committee to review and redevelop articles relating to divorce, which are open to interpretation...to fill the gaps and ensure the protection of the rights of spouses and children", said Abdelaziz Bouteflika in a statement read on his behalf. In Algeria, the Family Code passed in 1984, under the era of single party rule, was revised in 2005 is based on Sharia (Islamic law). Many Algerian associations of women's rights consider it unconstitutional on the grounds that it does not respect the equality of citizens as set out in the constitution.
