Torture is "widespread" says UN experts

The United Nations’ opinion on the situation in Eritrea is clear: “[It] is a country where detention is an ordinary fact of life that is experienced by a disproportionate number of people, men and women, old people and young people, including children.” UN experts presented their initial findings to the Council of Human Rights, four months after the start of their work, based on oral or written testimonies from more than 500 individuals. The Eritrean authorities opposed the creation of the commission and did not allow UN investigators to enter.
