Striking workers set up roadblock
March 26 th, 2015
A makeshift roadblock, set up at the entrance of the gravel path leading to the site, was set up by more than 50 workers to block access to the largest nickel and cobalt mine, AmbatovyMoramanga. The mine is located in south-central Madagascar, 80 kilometres from Antananarivo. Miners have been on strike since 16 March. Two of their colleagues were arrested a few days ago. The Canadian company Sherritt is the main shareholder of Ambatovy mine. The mining giant accuses workers of stealing a shipment of 900,000 litres of fuel, or the equivalent of 31 tankers.
