Tsunami risk after earthquake

An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale occurred Sunday just off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The earth shook at a depth of 65 km, 54 km from the nearest town, Kokopo, on the island of New Britain, and 789 km from the capital Port Moresby. The initial quake was followed by an aftershock measuring 5.7 in the same area. "Based on the preliminary parameters of the earthquake [...] dangerous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1,000 kilometres of the epicentre," said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
