April 13 th, 2015

Turkish justice opened Monday the issue of the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of the country. The disaster claimed the lives of 301 miners and tarnished the image of the Islamic-conservative government of President RecepTayyip Erdogan. Forty-five people have appeared before court, including the eight most senior executives of the company operating the mine, for deliberately neglecting the safety of their workers in the name of a race to profitability. At the conclusion of its investigation, the prosecutor requested severe penalties against the eight officials. They could face up to 25 years in prison.
