High perinatal deaths

SA had 60 000 recorded perinatal deaths in 3 years, according to Statistician Pali Lehohla on Thursday. The figure shows that 22 116perinatal deaths were recorded in 2013, 23 167 in 2012 and 22 290in 2011.  A total of 66% were stillbirths and 34% were early neonatal births. There were more male than female deaths recorded. Neonatal death occurs between 24 and 167 hours after birth. KZN and Gauteng has had the highest proportion. The majority deaths occurred in hospitals. The leading cause was attributed to stillborn foetuses, maternal factors and respiratory and cardiovascular disorders.
