Pilot killed while battling Cape fire

March 9 th, 2015

Cape Town – Willem Hendrik “Bees” Marais, a freelance flyer for a poverty relief programme, was killed when his Bell 212 helicopter with 1000 litres of water in a bambi-bucket crashed while dousing the one of Cape Town fires on Monday. Marais had to make a forced landing near Olifantsbos in the TableMountainNational Park when he crashed. Willem had worked during the week fighting against the blaze which raged since last Sunday. His colleagues described him as a very calm, smiley and friendly person. He was good in aviation, tough and shared his know-how with many other pilots. As the fight against Cape fire continues, we extend our condolences to Marais' family.
