Protest at Church Square today
April 7 th, 2015
Sunette Bridges, the daughter of late South African musician Bles Bridges, has organised a chain reaction protest at Church Square in Pretoria on the 8April. The protest is in reaction to the recent vandalism of the Paul Kruger statue and monument in Church Square.
There has been increased cultural tension across the country as the debate around the removal of colonial statues continues. “This is an attempt at ridding the Afrikaner of their language, culture, heritage and religion,” writes Bridges on the event’s Facebook page. “We want to show the government that we will no longer be quiet and sit back as we watch our cultural heritage being forcefully removed”. Bridges will be joined by Afrikaans music sensation Steve Hofmeyer at 1pm.
The protest is scheduled to start at 10am and protesters are encouraged to bring posters, chairs and umbrellas in case of rain.
