Johannesburg – In Netherlands he was “The Balck Meteor”. In Italy, fans called him “The Maserati”. In Spain, he signed for Spanish giants Barcelona. But in his home land during the apartheid era, Steve Mokone’s accomplishments seemed to go unnoticed. Last month, he died in Washington DC USA at age 82. As a pioneer in the history of soccer in the 50s, he was the first black South African to play in European leagues. An honorific tribute was held on Saturday at the largest stadium in SA. SA’s top political leaders attended to celebrate his life and success.
