Corrective rape a reality in SA

April 23 rd, 2015

Corrective rape is a reality for many lesbians in South Africa. A quarter of women identified as lesbians have had unwanted sex with men to “cure” them of their sexual orientation, according to study published in 2013. Journalist and filmmaker Iris Lebrun, graduated in literature from the Royal Holloway University of London, produced ashort documentary called Mummy Busi, dedicated to Busisiwe, a social worker, football coach of women’s team, lesbian and mother of five children. The film was made in order to raise public awareness about the epidemic of rape faced by lesbians in SA, though it is rarely talked about and still unknown in many countries.
