SA climbers stuck on Mount Everest
April 28 th, 2015
Following the tremendous quake in Nepal, where 18 SA girls were unscathed from the chaos, a group of about eight South African climbers narrowly escaped death after an avalanche, caused by the quake, on Mount Everest. The avalanche has claimed at least 17 lives. The SA expedition team, including Jo’burg climbers Marlette Hegyi and Wilmien van der Merwe, was led by uMdloti adventurer, Sean Wisedale. The earthquake and the avalanche occurred while they were at Mount Everest’s base camp. They called their families via satellite phone to tell them that they are safe after experiencing the aftershock of the quake. The avalanche hit very close to the group. They still have their tents and supplies.
