Cape Town - Robben Island, where Madiba was imprisoned, will be converted into a solar energy area, said the Minister of Tourism on Thursday. SA government plans to install solar panels to the botanical gardens, national parks and historic sites of the country by the end of the legislature in 2019. The minister noted that Robben Island will be one of the pilot sites. The pilot programme will commence sometime this year. The former prison has solely depended on diesel generators. In 1999 UNESCO declared the Island aWorld Heritage site. The Island, which had particularly detained political prisoners, is one of the main tourist attractions of the country.
