Pretoria - Bob Hewitt(75), former Australian-South African tennis champion, was sentenced Monday to six years in prison for raping teenage girls he coached in 1980 and 1990. Justice must be done, ven for an elderly accused even if the crime were committed many years ago, according to Judge Bert Bam at Pretoria High Court. Hewitt was found guilty in March. The judge, however, considered the former champion’s health status as a mitigating factor when he passed sentence. Hewitt has suffered several heart attacks and has undergone multiple surgeries to his knees, Achilles tendon and shoulder. The judge extended Hewitt’s bail for another day to allow his defence lawyer to appeal the decision.
