Cop pleaded not guilty for protest killing

Pretoria - A Soshanguve policeman pleaded not guilty on murder and attempted murder charges on Thursday in the North Gauteng High Court. Hyde Mophosho (44) was accused of opening fire on a crowd of protesters with illegal shotgun ammunition. The shooting occurred on 13 January, 2014. However, he denied the unlawful possession of SSG shotgun ammunition. He said he only had rubber bullets in his R5 rifle. Mophosho was on duty at the time when residents of Mothutlung protested against water shortage in their area. Police officers were said to have fired tear gas and shots without any provocation from the oncoming crowd. Six people were shot – three died and three were seriously injured. The trial was expected to continue yesterday.
