Tourism’s in a pickle by new rules

NEWS

June 2 nd, 2015

Pretoria - SA has begun to implement new border control rules for people travelling with a minor. Travellers have to have an unabridged birth certificate as well as a passport for the minor child. The new legislation came into effect to fight against child trafficking and could impact negatively on SA’s tourism industry. Tourism is one of the few growing sectors in the country which accounts for nearly 10% of GDP. The new safety measure might cause tourists to choose other destinations. Figures from the International Air Transport Association (ATA) shows that flight bookings to SA has plunged with 20% in June compared to June 2014, according to a professional organisation of tourism industry Satsa. The SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the measure is ‘economic sabotage’.
