SA declares war on alcoholism
June 3 rd, 2015
Pretoria - SA should take measures to fight alcoholism, according to a report from the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Alcoholism has been responsible for a scourge of recorded hospital admissions. According to figures, the financial impact of alcoholism in SA is equivalent to 10% of GDP, and the mortality rate for alcohol-related births is 141 times higher than recorded in the USA. Pretoria wants to increase the legal age for drinking alcohol from age 18 to 21, and to punish illegal alcohol markets. Brewers and alcoholic beverage manufacturers will be economic victims of such measures. Role players have 30 days to submit their proposals regarding the soon-to-be legislation.
