Over 200 parliamentarians approved the president’s 5% salary increase. Zuma will now earn about R2.7 million per annum. The salary revaluation comes after the police department’s report on Nkadlagate, clearing Zuma of repaying a portion of the R252 million taken from the public treasury to renovate his private residence. Zuma is the fifth most paid of all head of states. However, the president has never accepted an increase of salary above inflation, as he is mostly sensitive to the socio-economic situation of the country. The increase resulted in the commission’s decision to raise civil workers’ remuneration with 5 to 6%.
