Violence hinders SA cities’ growth
June 10 th, 2015
Pretoria - ‘Can violent cities deliver economic growth?’ The topic of discussion concerns the county’s urban centres. Several SA’s cities are under economic threat, caused by all forms of violence. Cities are the centre of economic and social activity and their growth is mingled with violence and conflict in several cases. The abundance of illegal firearms, alcohol abuse and fast-growing informal settlements perpetuates the problem. Urgent interventions are needed to be implemented, according to participants at an Institute for Security Studies seminar on Monday. Small and medium businesses are reluctant to grow for the fear of being targeted by criminals, especially with the amount of guns flooding our streets.
