Guide justifies lion attack
June 11 th, 2015
The SA tour guide, who led the tour in Johannesburg Park, on Monday said the tragedy occurred due to the tourists’ neglect. Pierre Potgieter (66), hospitalised and still severely traumatised, strongly denies having entered the lion’s enclosure with open car windows. He said he drove and stopped to allow Katherin Chappell an opportunity to observe a group of lions. She had a camera and by her own will, she lowered the window to take pictures. The lion jumped through and bit her in the throat. He called for help while trying to stop the victim’s bleeding. Someone apparently came to help but seemed reluctant and left Potgieter and the victim in the car. An ambulance arrived but it was too late.
