Al-Bashir missing in action
June 16 th, 2015
Johannesburg – A SA court has issued a temporary order prohibiting the Sudanese president Omar El Bashir to leave SA early Sunday afternoon. Bashir took part in the 25th AU summit. The ICC requested the arrest of the Sudanese head of State for genocide and war crimes in the Sudanese province of Darfur. The Southern Africa Litigation Centre, a local Human Right NGO, urged the SA justice to arrest and transfer al-Bashir to the Scheveningen prison in The Hague. Two charges are linked to the events in Darfur: the violence in the western region of Darfur in 2003 and the 2010 genocide killing of more than 300,000 people. An SA official attending the Summit said al-Bashir will benefit from diplomatic immunity, so he was not expected to be handed over ICC.
