June 17 th, 2015

Studies by experts of the WHO show that alcoholism has become a public health problem in SA. The average annual consumption is estimated at 20 litres of pure alcohol per person per year, an equivalent of 220 bottles of wine. SA sadly ranks among the ten largest consumers of alcohol in the world. Infants are victims of foetal alcohol syndrome. SA authorities acknowledge that alcohol is the third leading cause of death in the country. Young boys and girls are increasingly affected by alcohol abuse. More than 37% of South Africans consume alcohol from Friday to Monday morning. SA recorded over 7,000 alcohol-related deaths. To limit the damage, Pretoria has banned certain alcohol ads, restrict sales hours and minimum age of consumption from 18 to 21.
