Wild cat species are “critically endangered”

June 23 rd, 2015

Despite the success of conservation efforts in South Africa, the lion is still globally classified as a ‘vulnerable’ species due to its decline in numbers in Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) placed West and East Africa  on the ‘Red lists’ of endangered species. The future of the lion remains dark, according to IUCN. Several other mammals will face increasing threats due to hunting and loss of habitat. Poachers hunt lions to trade bones and other body parts for traditional medicine. The overshadowed decline has threatened the extinction of 22,784 species of animals and plants. A massive initiative is necessary for the IUCN to restore conservation breeding and to curb poaching.
