South Africa could leave the ICC

June 25 th, 2015

Pretoria - SA could consider leaving the ICC if the court does not accept the reforms proposed by Pretoria, said SA’s Deputy Minister on Tuesday. Pretoria has been implicated in the alleged escape of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, wanted by the ICC for war crimes and genocide. Deputy Minister of Traditional Affairs spoke on behalf of the ANC during a heated parliamentary debate, saying that SA would claim the ICC reforms and accusing SA of losing its credibility. If the ICC does not accept the proposed reforms, SA has no choice but to reconsider its ICC membership. The DA has accused the government of violating the constitution by letting the Sudanese president leave the country despite a high court order.
