Quills: a deadly meal for a python

An African rock python (python sebae) died at the Lake Eland Game Reserve after swallowing porcupine on Friday. The porcupine weighed 13.9 kilos. According to reserve spokesperson Jennifer Fuller, the incident is unusual because the four-metre python can usually digest a porcupine of that size without problems despite the sharp quills. Fuller believes the python was stressed while it ate the porcupine because too many people were watching. When a snake is stressed, it regurgitates and abandons its prey in order to escape. Thus its death came six days after swallowing the porcupine. Sebae pythons are the largest snakes in Africa and can swallow prey much more impressive than a porcupine, such as an antelope
