Electricity protest turns into vandalism

The electricity protest in Winnie Mandela, Tembisa on Tuesday around 7pm has resulted in material damages and looting. The Red Ant Security and Eviction Services decided to stop providing electricity to some of the houses that were illegally wired up. The angry residents set road blocks to protest against the cut-off. They set the local clinic on fire and brunt eleven cars in the parking lot of the premises. Nearby building windows were broken. The strike has intensified and residents moved on to vandalise and loot foreign nationals’ shops. One person was caught and arrested in one of the shops. The rest managed to run away. Police continue to monitor the area.
