Pretoria plans boost electricity

April 29 th, 2015

The City of Tshwane and Pretoria is planning to revive power to end electricity shortage due to lack of capacity at the state-owned utility. The municipality of 2.9 million inhabitants aim to restore the Pretoria West and Rooiwal power plants by altering fuel used from expensive quality coal. The Pretoria West power plant has been producing 180MW for more than 50 years already. The Rooiwal facility generates 450MW. Both plant’s coal production have been below expectation. Exporting the coal would be more profitable, according to chief sustainability specialist. Tshwane struggles with national legislation to buy power directly from Eskom. A plan to build 40Megawatts of solar-power facility has already been implemented.
