Foreigner’s SA wife terrorised

April 30 th, 2015

Being married to a foreigner is not easy for SA women living in their own country. Thelma Okoro has struggled to find her place in her own country because she is married to a Nigerian. Nurses condemned her life choices, while examining her sick child. They also questioned why she dresses like a Nigerian.  Her application to obtain an RDP house was refused, unless she would divorce her husband. She joined Unwisa, a Nigerian group founded in SA. The group of women all patronised by harassment, organised picnics and intercommunity football tournaments in support of a petition presented to the government. “If they had listened to us” said Thelma, “xenophobic attacks would not happen.”
