Comair challenges SAA
May 6 th, 2015
Pretoria - Comair CEO Erik Venter launched a court application against SAA in 2013 for non-compliance with the domestic aviation transport policy. Comair refers to airline bailouts and state payments made to SAA. Comair suggested sound commercial principles stating that all operators should face the same risks and requirements in a competition-friendly environment. The court application was launched in February 2013 following government’s bailout of R5bn. SAA was granted a total of R15bn over three years to develop a turnaround strategy. And this year, another R5bn injection will be allocated to SAA. Comair did not want to stop support for SAA, neither shut or privatise the airline, but needs relevant domestic transport policy to minimise the impact on other operators.
