Start own town
“The good Lord has just kept sending them,”granddad Leo told local media. “We could start our own town…We just love them all and they are all so precious,” said Leo Zanger, as he welcomed his newest family member, born on8 April. He called the new-born “just another precious little bundle”.
Leo and his wife recently celebrated their 59thwedding anniversary. The couple has 12 children, 53 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson. The oldest of his children is Lane (58), and the youngest is Joe (31), who was already an uncle of 10 kids by the time he was born.
Most of the family lives in Quincy, Illinois, where Leo runs a real estate agency, which employs four sons, one daughter and two daughters-in law.
Rent a church for family dinners
Though it is quite challenging to gather the whole family, the Zanger family holds a get-together on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, but because of their size, they rent their church hall for the family dinners. A family gathering usually consists of 50 pounds of ham and 10 turkeys.
“When we get together, it’s big. It’s really big,” Lane said. “There are a lot of people, a lot of kids, but that’s what it’s all about. We always have a really good time.”
Need a reminder
Keeping track of this mega family is not that easy. Donna Lane, Leo and Ruth’s daughter, is designated to keep record of the anniversaries, birthdays, and even reminds her parents whose birthday is coming up. “My dad sees them all often, but with so many people, occasionally he needs a reminder about a name….There is still room for one more,” Ruth told the local newspaper Herald-Whig.
